Dhoni-led India don’t (Ki)win

The match was attended by 16.225 people.

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Ravindra Jadeja made way for Harbhajan Singh.

New Zealand made seven changes to the (Pat)eleven that last played the Indians – Lou Vincent, Peter Fulton, Scott Styris, Craig McMillan, Shane Bond, Mark Gillespie and Jeetan made way for Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill, Nathan McCullum, Ian Butler, Tim Southee, Neil Broom and Iain O’Brien.

On winning the toss, Daniel Vettori, New Zealand’s skipper, inserted the visitors.

Although his innings included a boundary, Gautam Gambhir had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the six-run stand. A couple of overs into the match, O’Brien broke the 25-run stand.

Virender Sehwag, whose 10-ball innings included four sixes, scored 26. O’Brien had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the run-a-ball stand.

India scored 50 off 5.1 overs (31 balls). New Zealand had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Although his run-a-ball innings included a six, Rohit Sharma had no reason to be in seventh heaven – 13 balls after Sehwag’s dismissal, he was caught by Brendon McCullum, Nathan’s younger brother and the player of the match. Butler broke the 22-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, who faced three balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Vettori, who broke the two-run stand.

Mahendra Singh, India’s skipper, faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring just a couple. (Dho)Nine balls later, Butler broke the five-run stand.

Yusuf Pathan, whose eight-ball innings included three sixes, scored 20. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Jacob Oram. Nathan broke the 21-run stand.

India scored 100 off 13 overs (80 balls). New Zealand had conceded four extras at that point.

Suresh Raina’s half-century – which included a boundary and five sixes – came off 38 balls. He eventually scored 61 off 43 balls, which included a couple of boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes. He was unbeaten.

Irfan Pathan, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored 12. Twenty-three balls after Yusuf’s dismissal, he was caught by Nathan. Ryder broke the 19-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 50 off 34 balls. While Raina’s contribution to the partnership was 36, Harbhajan’s contribution to it was a dozen. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Harbhajan, whose 22-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 21. Thirty-nine balls after Irfan’s dismissal, Southee broke the 61-run partnership.

New Zealand eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. India scored 162 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs. Nathan and Ryder bowled a couple of overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 27, the latter was in seventh heaven.

Southee and Vettori bowled four overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 42, the latter conceded 18. O’Brien and Butler bowled four overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 36, the latter conceded 29.

Ryder scored a run. Seven balls into the chase, he was trapped leg be‘four’ wicket by Ishant Sharma, who broke the two-run stand.

New Zealand scored 50 off 5.4 overs (38 balls). India had conceded four extras at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 30 balls. While Brendon’s contribution to the partnership was nine, Guptill’s contribution to it was 39. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Guptill, whose 28-ball innings included four boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 41. Thirty-three balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Harbhajan, who broke the 54-run partnership.

New Zealand scored 100 off 11.4 overs (75 balls). India had conceded five extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 39 balls. While Brendon’s contribution to the partnership was 18, Ross Taylor’s contribution to it was 31. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

The third-wicket partnership was a half-century partnership. Taylor, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary and three sixes, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Forty balls later, he was dismissed by Khan.

New Zealand scored 150 off 17.5 overs (113 balls). India had conceded eight extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

McCullum’s half-century – which included a couple of boundaries and three sixes – came off 46 balls.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 30 balls. While Brendon’s contribution to the partnership was 25, Oram’s contribution to it was 23. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Brendon, whose 49-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 56. He was unbeaten, as was Oram, who eventually scored 29. His 15-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes.

New Zealand, who scored 166 for the loss of three wickets off 18.5 overs, won by seven wickets with seven balls to spare. Yuvraj, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 17. Yusuf, who bowled 2.5 wicketless overs, conceded 37. Irfan, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 38.
