England avenge loss; India D(hon)isappointed

India made a couple of changes to theiR Playing eleven – Irfan Pathan and Pragyan Ojha made way for Ravindra Jadeja and Singh.

England made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Darren Maddy, Vikram Solanki, Andrew Flintoff and Chris Tremlett made way for Ravi Bopara, James Foster, Graeme Swann and Ryan Sidebottom, the player of the match.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

Luke Wright had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Ten balls into the match, he was caught by Yusuf Pathan. Rudra Pratap broke the three-run stand.

England scored 50 off seven overs (43 balls). India had conceded an extra at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 35 balls. While Ravi Bopara’s contribution to the partnership was 28, Kevin Pietersen’s contribution to it was 35. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Bopara, whose run-a-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, eventually scored 37. Fifty-five balls later, Jadeja broke the 71-run partnership.

Pietersen, whose 27-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, eventually scored 46. Thirteen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Pietersen, who broke the 18-run stand.

England scored 100 off 15 overs (92 balls). India had conceded three extras at that point.

Dimitri Mascarenhas, whose 27-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 25. He was unbeaten.

Owais Shah, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Twenty-six balls after Pietersen’s dismissal, he was caught by Jadeja. Harbhajan Singh broke the 30-run stand.

Although his five-ball innings included a boundary, Paul Collingwood had no reason to be in seventh heaven – seven balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Zaheer Khan, who broke the 16-run stand.

Foster, whose five-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Harbhajan, who broke the seven-run stand.

The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Swann, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Harbhajan.

England scored 150 off 19.5 overs (125 balls). India had conceded 16 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Stuart Broad, who faced a ball, scored three. He was unbeaten.

England scored 153 for the loss of seven wickets off 20 overs. Yuvraj Singh, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 20. He was wicketless, as was Ishant Sharma, who bowled four overs, conceding 36.

Khan and Rudra Pratap bowled three overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 26, the latter conceded 13. Jadeja, who bowled four overs, conceded 26. He picked up a couple of scalps, as did Harbhajan, who bowled four overs, conceding 30.

Rohit Sharma, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored nine. Eleven balls into the chase, Sidebottom broke the 12-run stand.

Suresh Raina, who faced five balls, scored a couple. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Wright. Sidebottom broke the 12-run stand.

India scored 50 off 8.3 overs (54 balls). England had conceded four extras at that point.

Gautam Gambhir, whose run-a-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 26. Forty-two balls later, he was caught by Broad. Mascarenhas broke the 42-run stand.

Jadeja, whose 35-ball innings included a boundary, scored 25. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Broad. Swann broke the 23-run stand.

Yuvraj, whose nine-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 17. Three balls later, he was stumped by Foster. Swann broke the two-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on 50 off 32 balls. While Dhoni’s contribution to the partnership was 24, Yusuf’s contribution to it was 26. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Dhoni, whose 20-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 30. He was unbeaten, as was Yusuf, who scored 33. His 17-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes.

England eventually conceded eight extras. India, who scored 150 for the loss of five wickets off 20 overs (124 balls), lost by three runs.

Pietersen bowled a wicketless over, conceding nine. Wright bowled two wicketless overs, conceding 16. James Anderson and Broad bowled four wicketless overs. While the former conceded 32, the latter conceded 21.
