Sharma Leads; India are triumphant

India made three changes to their playing eleven – Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar made way for Lokesh Rahul, Dinesh Karthik and Jaydev Unadkat.

Sri Lanka made five Cha(meera)nges to their playing eleven – Dilshan Munaweera, Ashan Priyanjan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Isuru Udana and Lasith Malinga made way for Kusal Perera, Asela Gunaratne, Dushmantha, Twenty20 International debutant Vishwa Fernando and Nuwan Pradeep.

On winning the toss, Thisara Perera, Sri Lanka’s skipper, inserted the hosts.

The first Powerplay of India’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 50, for the loss of a wicket.

Rohit, India’s skipper, scored 17. His 13-ball innings included a couple of boundaries. Five overs into the (Shar)match, he was caught by Chameera. Angelo Mathews broke the 38-run stand.

India scored 50 off half-a-dozen overs (36 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded an extra at that point.

Thirty-seven balls into the match, India sought a batting review. Rahul was the batsman. It was upheld by umpire Nitin Menon.

Rahul’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six – came off 34 balls.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 32 balls. While Rahul’s contribution to the partnership was 33, Shreyas Iyer’s contribution to it was 15. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

India scored 100 off 12.3 overs (75 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

Iyer, whose 20-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 24. Forty-six balls after Sharma’s dismissal, he was caught by Niroshan Dickwella. Pradeep broke the 63-run partnership.

Rahul, whose 48-ball innings included seven boundaries and a six, eventually scored 61. Eleven balls later, Thisara broke the run-a-ball stand.

India scored 150 off 18.2 overs (110 balls). Sri Lanka had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 27 balls. While Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s contribution to the partnership was 21, Manish Pandey’s contribution to it was 26. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was five.

Dhoni, whose 22-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, eventually scored 39. He was unbeaten, as was Pandey, who eventually scored 22. His 18-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes.

The number of extras they eventually conceded gave India no reason to be in seventh heaven.

India scored 180 for the loss of three wickets off 20 overs.

Fernando, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 16. Chameera, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 38. Akila Dananjaya, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 30.

Mathews, who bowled three overs, conceded 19. He picked up a wicket, as did Pradeep and Thisara, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former conceded 38, the latter conceded 37.

Mathews had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Chahal, who broke the seven-run stand.

Sri Lanka scored 50 off 8.1 overs (49 balls). India hadn’t conceded any extras at that point.

Gunaratne’s run-a-ball innings included a boundary. Ten balls after Mathews’ D(hon)ismissal, he was stumped. Chahal broke the nine-run stand.

Dasun Shanaka, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Eight balls later, he was caught by Hardik Pandya. Kuldeep Yadav broke the three-run stand.

Thisara, who faced four balls, scored three. Five balls later, he was stumped by Dhoni. Chahal broke the four-run stand.

Kusal, who faced 28 balls, scoreD(ho)nineteen. Nine balls later, he was caught behind. Yadav broke the eight-run stand.

Dananjaya, who faced seven balls, scored as many. Eight balls later, he was caught by Pandya, who broke the six-run stand.

Chameera, whose 14-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. Ten balls later, he was caught by Rahul. Pandya broke the nine-run stand.

Fernando, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Unadkat. Pandya broke the two-run stand.

Pradeep, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.

India eventually conceded a couple of extras. Sri Lanka, who were bundled out for 87 off 16 overs, lost by 93 runs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 10.

Unadkat, who bowled a couple of overs, had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he picked up a wicket. Yadav, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. He picked up a couple of wickets. Pandya, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. He picked up three wickets. Chahal, who bowled four overs, conceded 23. He picked up four scalps.

India led the three-match series 1-0.
